The operation of a flyback converter is based on a coupled inductor—a magnetic component with an air-gapped core—that both converts power and provides isolation between the converter’s input and output. When input voltage is applied to the primary winding, energy is stored in the core’s air gap. Upon switching, that stored energy is then transferred to the secondary winding to drive the load. Thus, a flyback transformer’s primary functions are voltage conversion and circuit isolation.
Because the coupled inductor can support multiple secondary windings, the flyback topology is ideal for applications requiring multi-output supplies. Flyback transformers are commonly used in isolated power supplies up to around 120 W, since they offer galvanic isolation,multiple outputs, including positive and negative rails, wide input voltage and load-condition regulation.
